Hormone-induced Parthenocarpy in the Calimyrna Fig and a Comparison of Parthenocarpic and Caprified Syconia.

چکیده
The problems associated with caprification (pollination) of Calimyrna figs and the desirability of standardizing or, still better, eliminating this cultural operation have been discussed (5). Because of its relatively low cost, low required concentration, and complete lack of injurious effects on fruit and foliage, para-chlorophenoxyacetic acid was found, during the season of 1948, to offer considerable promise as a material to induce parthenocarpy and, thereby, substitute for caprification of the Calimyrna fig (4). Commercial exploratory trials during the season of 1949 demonstrated the practicability of using this material as a substitute for cross-pollination by the fig wasp. The extent to which the industry adopts this practice depends mainly upon the demand by the consuming public for a fig that does not contain sclerified achenes ("seeds") and lacks the "nutty" flavor which characterizes caprified Calimyrna figs. Although the largest percentage of figs set in the 1948 investigation was obtained with an aqueous spray containing 60 p.p.m. of para-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (4), further information was desired on the range in concentration of this compound effective in promoting parthenocarpy and the thoroughness with which the spray should be applied. Tests with Sure Set, a proprietary material containing para-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, parafluorophenoxyacetic acid, and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid were also made and will be discussed later. The commercial trials mentioned above enabled the periodic collection of samples large enough to make certain physical and chemical comparisons between induced parthenocarpic and caprified figs.

The Use of Growth-regulating Chemicals to Induce Parthenocarpic Fruit in the Calimyrna Fig.
Certain varieties of many species of plants develop their fruits parthenocarpically or without fertilization. The apple and pear occasionally produce parthenocarpic fruits but generally under special nutritive conditions (10). In some varieties of grapes, figs, bananas, and oranges, parthenocarpy is of great economic importance (4, 14). Because of this naturally occurring phenomenon, attention ...
متن کاملSpread of endosepsis in calimyrna fig orchards.
ABSTRACT Pollination of the edible fig (Ficus carica cv. Calimyrna) is mediated by a small symbiotic wasp, Blastophaga psenes, that inhabits the syconium cavity of the spring crop of fig pollinator trees (caprifigs). These fig wasps also carry propagules, mainly of Fusarium verticillioides (formerly F. moniliforme) and other Fusarium spp., which cause endosepsis, from pollinator figs to the edi...
متن کاملCytokinin-Induced Parthenocarpic Fruit Development in Tomato Is Partly Dependent on Enhanced Gibberellin and Auxin Biosynthesis
Fruit set of plants largely depends on the biosynthesis and crosstalk of phytohormones. To date the role of cytokinins (CKs) in the fruit development is less understood. Here, we showed that parthenocarpic fruit could be induced by 1-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-3-phenylurea (CPPU, an active CK) in tomato (Solanumlycopersicum cv. Micro-Tom). The fresh weight of CPPU-induced parthenocarpic fruits was co...
متن کاملComparative transcriptome analysis provides insights into molecular mechanisms for parthenocarpic fruit development in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)
Genetic control of parthenocarpy, a desirable trait in edible fruit with hard seeds, has been extensively studied. However, the molecular mechanism of parthenocarpic fruit development in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is still unclear. To provide insights into eggplant parthenocarpy, the transcriptomic profiles of a natural parthenocarpic (PP05) and two non-parthenocarpic (PnP05 and GnP05) egg...
متن کاملOptimisation of transgene action at the post-transcriptional level: high quality parthenocarpic fruits in industrial tomatoes
BACKGROUND Genetic engineering of parthenocarpy confers to horticultural plants the ability to produce fruits under environmental conditions that curtail fruit productivity and quality. The DefH9-iaaM transgene, whose predicted action is to confer auxin synthesis specifically in the placenta, ovules and derived tissues, has been shown to confer parthenocarpy to several plant species (tobacco, e...
